employment, and strengthen the

Celebrating Vesak
Young Buddhist Association started
it's inception with celebrating Vesak
(Lord Buddha's Birthday). The main
highway from Katunayake to edge of
Seeduwa town, (about 4 KM) was decorated
with Buddhist flags and youth singing
Buddhist carols on a decorated float
toured the entire town area till late at
night.

Supplies sent to the refugees in the eastern province of Sri Lanka.
On August 7th
2006, supplies ( bottled water and food items
) were packed and sent to the
refugees, since the sluice gates in
Mawilaru in the eastern province was
closed, the people as well as the troops
had difficulty in finding drinking
water. About 50,000 acres of paddy
harvest was destroyed. YBA reacted swiftly to an urgent
call and collected a large amount
of supplies to be sent to the eastern
province of Sri Lanka.

Free computer classes for young people
Free computer training center for
the under privileged children.
Altogether 65 children attend this
program including 15 orphan children
from a nearby orphanage. There are two
classes for theory, and for practical
training.

Free eye camp
An eye camp was held for the poor in
the area, where a volunteer optician
tested their sight and the association
distributed spectacles gifted to them
from USA. About 350 needy people
benefited from the eye camp.

Keeping the environment clean
As an environmental project, steel
drums donated by a road re-building
company was converted into garbage bins
by volunteers and distributed to the
temples and schools in the area.
An arms giving
An arms giving and a spiritual program
was performed in a leading temple in the
area to confer merit to the victims of
the Tsunami devastation.
School building restored
A school building was completely
restored with the donations made by the
treasurer and the help of the
association.
Helping victims of Tsunami
Members of the association
comprising of ten ladies and few others
traveled to the Tsunami hit south of Sri
Lanka and having located a refugee camp
of 50 families cooked a hot nourishing
special meal and served all the people
in the camp, which included
approximately 300 people. Meanwhile
spectacles were also distributed among
these refugees of the camp and the needy
people of the area.

YBA built a house for a family
devastated by the Tsunami
A family of six members destitute by
the December 26th Tsunami, reached our
town seeking refuge among their
relatives. The bread winner of the
family and few members were killed and
their properties were destroyed by the
tragedy. The association stepped in to
help them and initiated to build a house
in a plot of land donated by the
government.

Boosting self employment
YBA made a monetary donation to a
lady to improve her self employment
project of sewing garments.

Bodhi Pooja for the soldiers
Young Buddhist Association held a bodhi pooja
on the 23rd September 2006 to confer merit to
soldiers who lost their lives at the war front and
also to invoke blessings of the triple gem to
the fighting cadre.

Distribution of medicinal plants
100 medicinal plants called "Gammalu" or Gam Weduma,
Botanical name- Pterocarpus Marsupium, Family - Sabaceae,
English name - Gumkina tree - was distributed free
among people
at the pooja ceremony. The
latex of the tree is an effective
medicine for diabetes.
